Lily’s Public Speaking Notes.
Session 1: Warmth, Authority & Natural Connection
09.04.26
🌟 Your Superpowers
Lily, you are genuinely one to watch when it comes to public speaking.
You have a powerful combination of qualities that are very hard to teach:
Warmth and likeability
A natural, positive energy
Engaging personality
Strong professional presence
Good posture, use of open hand gestures, facial expression, eye contact
You come across as someone people:
👉 trust quickly, feel comfortable with, and want to listen to
That is a huge asset.
One of your standout strengths is your ability to shift tone and bring personality into your delivery. When you slow down, you bring range and style, and that’s what makes speakers engaging.
You also have a good instinct for making your content relevant, particularly in how it connects to the customer. That ability to translate ideas into real-world impact is a key part of a high-level communicator’s personal brand.
You’re already operating from a strong foundation.
🔧 Builds / Next Focus Areas
Pacing = Your Authority Switch ⏱️
Your biggest unlock is pacing.
The difference between when you speak quickly and when you slow down is:
👉 night and day
When you:
Slow down
Use pauses
Take space
You instantly:
Increase your authority
Command the room more
Allow your message to land fully
Bring a more engaging and varied tone to your speech
This is less about adding something new — and more about trusting that you deserve to take your time. It’s a reset from ‘I just want to get this done’ to ‘I’m going to enjoy this, bathe in the spotlight’. (That might take some work to feel comfortable in the shift.
Confidence = Owning Your Space 🧠
You absolutely deserve to be up there.
Some of the pressure you may feel, especially with peers, senior staff or familiar faces in the room, is completely natural.
The shift is internal:
👉 from “how am I being perceived?” → “I belong here”
Simple affirmations to reinforce this:
“I deserve to be here”
“I know my material”
“I’m in control of this space”
“This audience is on my side”
“I have something very valuable to say”
This mindset will allow your natural strengths to come through even more. You have the subject knowledge, you’ve earned the time and space to share it.
Preparation = Your Foundation 📈
You already have some strong content, now it’s about deep familiarity.
Practice is what will give you:
Ease
Confidence
Flexibility
The more you know your material inside out, the more:
👉 your delivery becomes natural and relaxed
Keep It Simple (Content Clarity)
Some of your content was landing very clearly when delivered at a slower pace. Your instinct for ending the middle section was spot on. You can map back to the script structure to see, have I used up my 6 sections within a speech.
With your best content:
Feels clear
Is well structured
Lands effectively
Your focus should be:
👉 delivery and presence, and content in the couple of areas we mentioned, just coming back to ‘what this means for you’ ‘the key insight’ ‘key messages’ they can take from complexity = client value.
Breathing & Grounding 🌬️
Continue using your breathing techniques before speaking. Use the affirmation (s) you most need to build that confident mindset before you go on.
Give yourself:
Space to slow down
Time to reset
This will help you step into your delivery with:
👉 calm, control, and confidence
Confidence🌬️
I will share a general sheet for everyone on this, to support you further in this area. You absolutely deserve to feel confident, you have so much to offer. It is also going to grow through experience, like a new drivers experience grows from being on the road. Note that the fears, concerns and difficult feelings that come up prior to a speaking event are very normal, it’s not a sign that anything is wrong, or that anything will go majorly wrong, it’s just a protection mechanism. I find it best to just acknowledge the fears and feeling, and just acknowledge it as that e.g ‘Ooh I’m a bit nervous, but I’m ok, I’ve got this, there’s nothing wrong’ . In my experience, speakers get paid to do what they do to manage the discomfort of the prep! (It’s the hardest part of the job, the event itself won’t be as hard as it feels before).
🚀 Key Identity Shift
You’re not just a good communicator.
👉 You’re developing into a warm, authoritative, and engaging speaker that people trust and connect with instantly.
Session 2 - 16.04.2026
Lily, this was strong. You’re a vibrant presence and a pleasure to work with.
Your humour is a genuine strength when you go for it. Moments like “livestock” and “gramophone” really landed. More of that. It brings your personality through and makes you memorable.
Your warmth and personality naturally shine through. You’re someone people warm to quickly, and that’s a huge asset as a speaker.
You’ve done a great job in slowing down. There’s still room to take it further. Allow yourself to pause, watch the audience’s responses, and take it in. When you take your time, it creates a better experience for them and you really come alive in those moments.
Really look people in the eye and even dare to feed off their response. You’re a naturally responsive person and that is one of your superpowers. It’s fun, engaging, and when you fully bring that into your delivery, it elevates everything.
You’ve done so well in learning your script and getting ‘off book’ as much as possible. For the next level, it’s about making it feel like you’re finding the words in the moment, rather than delivering something pre-prepared. Make it personal. Look at individuals in the room and connect with them.
A helpful mindset is to imagine you’re having a one-to-one conversation with different members of the audience, it just happens that others are listening. With practice, this will become a real superpower and people will connect with you even more.
Your emphasis on key words and phrases is becoming strong, so keep building on that. It adds clarity and impact to your delivery.
There’s a clear pattern that when you’re enjoying it, we enjoy it. The Slido response section was a great example. You were relaxed, expressive, and playful. The next step is to bring that same energy and life into the whole speech.
You are naturally very present in interpersonal interactions; engaged, warm, and responsive. The opportunity now is to bring more of that version of you onto the stage.
Your posture has become strong and grounded. To build on that, bring your left hand in more for gestures to support your spoken delivery. This is particularly helpful for audience members sitting further back, as it enhances their understanding. e.g future hand out ahead to signify future, precision ‘finger and thumb together’…etc.
As discussed, you can place notes on the lectern to reduce the need to turn back to the screen. If you do look at the slide, avoid speaking while turned away. Take your time, turn back, reconnect, then continue.
Slide 33, “marriage value” is a nice opportunity for a light moment. Something like, “What’s that I hear you ask?” can add a touch of humour and engagement.
Really well done, Lily. You’ve got a fantastic foundation, and as you continue to lean into your natural warmth, responsiveness and personality, you’re going to be a brilliant speaker.
